Southwest Airlines Special Liveries
Southwest Airlines has been painting aircraft in special liveries since 1984. The ones that they are most known for are their state planes, each one painted in a variation of the state’s flag or official seal and commemorates the states in which Southwest has a significant presence and/or history. Their first one was dedicated to their home state of Texas and the most recent one honors Hawaii with an artistic design from a native artist. As the original 737-700s reach the end of their service life Southwest began transferring the liveries to newer 737-800s so you’ll see a mix of the old and new in my collection. I’ve photographed all of the state planes up to the most recent one in 2023. Besides the states other interesting ones I’ve photographed are “Shamu 1”, the first plane painted like a killer whale with Sea World titles and the new 737-8 Max planes dedicated to founder Herb Kelleher and former President Colleen Barrett which are more of a retro style. Kelleher’s plane is painted in the original livery that Southwest used from its inception in 1971 to 2001 while Barrett’s plane is painted in the Canyon Blue livery used from 2001 until the current livery was introduced in 2014 (She was President of the company from 2001 to 2008).
